Newer Doesn't Mean Better When It Comes to Type 2 Diabetes Drugs An inexpensive type 2 diabetes drug that has been around for more than 15 years works just as well and has fewer side effects than a half-dozen other, mostly newer and more expensive classes of medication used to control the chronic disease, new Johns Hopkins research suggests.
In their report, published online March 14 in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, the Hopkins team found that metformin, an oral drug that was first approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 1995, not only controlled blood sugar, but was also less likely to cause weight gain or raise cholesterol levels.
"Metformin works for most people. It's cheaper, there's a generic form -- it's tried and true," says study leader Wendy L. Bennett, M.D., M.P.H., an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "Our study shows that even though there are all these newer drugs, metformin works just as well and has fewer side effects."
The study is an update of Hopkins research published in 2007 that also showed there were advantages to metformin. New classes of medication for adult-onset diabetes have been approved by the FDA since then, and Bennett and her colleagues wanted to know if the newer drugs were any better than the older crop...
Association Found Between Industry Funding and Promotional Pieces on Menopausal Hormone Therapy There may be a link between receiving industry funding for speaking, consulting, or research, and the publication of apparently promotional opinion pieces on menopausal hormone therapy. Furthermore, such publications may encourage physicians to continue prescribing these therapies to women of menopausal age.
These are the key findings of a study by Adriane Fugh-Berman from Georgetown University Medical Center, Washington D.C., USA, and colleagues, published in this week's PLoS Medicine.
Over the past three decades, menopausal hormones have been heavily promoted for preventing disease in women. However, the 2004 federally-funded Women's Health Initiative study that enrolled more than 26,000 women in the USA found that the most popular estrogen- progestin and estrogen-only formulations (often prescribed to women around the age of menopause) increased the risk of stroke, deep vein thrombosis, dementia, and incontinence; the combined therapy also increased breast cancer risk. Two years after the results of the Women's Health Initiative were published, a survey of more than 700 practicing gynecologists -- the specialists who prescribe the majority of hormone replacement therapies -- in the USA found that almost half did not find the findings of the Women Health Initiative Study convincing. This current study investigated whether promotional tone could be identified in narrative review articles regarding menopausal hormone therapy...
Another Reason to Skip the Soda: High Blood Pressure There's plenty of evidence that guzzling sugared drinks like sodas can harm your health. The extra calories can lead to obesity and contribute to heart problems and diabetes. Now researchers say the sweet beverages may boost blood pressure as well.
The risk is not entirely new, but the size of the relationship came as a surprise to the researchers, who published their findings in Hypertension: Journal of the American Heart Association. Led by Ian Brown, in the department of epidemiology and biostatistics at Imperial College London's School of Public Health, the group found that for every extra sugared beverage consumed, blood pressure — a ratio of systolic and diastolic pressure in the vessels — rose by an average of 1.6 mm Hg and 0.8 mm Hg respectively. While that may not seem like much, says Brown, when you consider that many children and adults down several cans of soda or sweetened fruit juices a day, the numbers can creep up.
The study involved close to 2,700 subjects aged 40 to 59 years in both the U.S. and the United Kingdom. The volunteers dutifully reported what they ate and drank over a four-day period, answered questions about their lifestyle and then provided urine for a detailed analysis. Those who drank more than one serving a day of sugar-sweetened beverages consumed nearly 400 more calories daily than those who didn't drink these products, and had higher body mass index measures than those who avoided the drinks. ..
More Women Opt For Less Invasive Breast Biopsies Researchers in Florida report that surgeons are performing many more invasive breast biopsies than needed. Another recent study finds similar rates of unnecessary biopsies in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
But, at the same time, that study offers good news: Nationwide, doctors in most states are adhering to guidelines and performing surgery for only 10-15 percent of biopsies for breast cancer. And the national average for so-called "open surgical biopsies" has declined dramatically in recent years.
That's in line with recommendations from the American College of Surgeons which call for the less invasive, less costly and less complicated "needle biopsy" for the vast majority — nearly 90 percent — of patients.
"We've come a long way," says radiologist Carol Lee with the American College of Radiology and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Lee notes that the needle biopsy doesn't require general anesthesia or stitches. And it doesn't cause scarring or risk complications associated with all surgery, including infection and bleeding.
Pointing to significant research in recent years, Lee calls the needle biopsy "as effective as surgical biopsy," adding that it's simply a different process of taking tissue.
"It spares 85 to 90 percent of women from having to have surgery," she says...

I am 46 years old. I have been doing antiaging protocols on myself mainly on HGH and pituitary support, detox and antioxidants since 2006 when I turned 42. About a year ago at age 45, I started having some issues with dryness and general body low grade stiffness and achenes. I was doing everything I could in terms of great nutrition, omega 3, HGH support and great lifestyle. I decided to try the Wiley protocol after I read the "Sex, Lies and Menopause" book from a friend.
Within 1 week, I woke up with no stiffness and my low grade of body achenes vanished. Within several weeks, I just felt great, feminine and "juicy" again. Sometimes it is hard to describe what it is like to feel so alive and so in love with life again...

Since my involvement with the Wiley Protocol, I have become more keenly aware of the nuances of hormonal interaction. The certification course really helps you understand the molecular aspects of hormonal relationships. The knowledge acquired significantly assists me in management of patients. I am constantly amazed at the level of interaction achieved on the protocol. It is exhilarating to be able to manipulate and manage at this level that I feel is infinitely more accurate than other methods of hormonal management. It answers the questions being posed regarding cancer and other dysfunction afflicting not only menopausal women but those women with significant alteration of cycle created by interaction with our estrogen toxic environment. This course is essential to being able to manage at this level...

Wiley Protocol Experts Answer Your Question:
Q: Why do men's levels decrease after starting the protocol and why does cholesterol increase?
A: Since the WP is a circannual protocol, it would depend on which season we are talking about. If they started on a high dose season, and are reporting feeling lack of reception in a low season that could be a reason . This is probably testicular suppression, but you will also notice that the conversion to estrogen is reduced and DHEA is elevated. The cholesterol issue is temporary until the Summer / Fall dosing If your serum test confirms good estrogen and testosterone levels, it might be time to look at your thyroid, adrenal activity of cortisol through saliva testing and diet. Also, less than seven hours of sleep a night can prevent your body from making HGH naturally, causing symptoms like you're describing.

F.Y.I... We have been told that there are many pharmacies around the country claiming to make the Wiley Protocol. Unless your hormones come in our color coded packaging (green and purple for women, blue and burgundy for men), it says Wiley all over and the pharmacy has our sign in their window, they have not registered with us to make the authentic Wiley Protocol. You would be getting a generic product that will not stand up to federal scrutiny for scientific study.
As a provider we expect you to honor our trademarks and send your prescriptions to a Wiley Registered Pharmacy.
