Why You Should Never Sleep With The Lights On Sleeping in total darkness is a crucial part of sleep hygiene that many overlook. Exposure even to a dim night-light may cause physical changes in the part of your brain called the hippocampus, which, as this Ohio State University hamster study showed, can set the stage for depression.
In fact, sleeping in total darkness is so important that nighttime light has been dubbed "light pollution" by the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA).
Light pollution refers to "any adverse effect of artificial light, including sky glow, glare, light trespass, light clutter, decreased visibility at night, and energy waste," as defined by the IDA. More subtle examples of light pollution are the strips of light that sneak in around your curtains at night, or even the soft blue glow of your clock radio.
All of these have the potential to negatively impact your health by altering your circadian rhythms. IDA writes:
"Light pollution wastes energy, affects astronomers and scientists, disrupts global wildlife and ecological balance, and has been linked to negative consequences in human health."
Light pollution has been shown to disturb animals and ecosystems, including the following:...
Stress Resilience Returns With Feeling for Rhythm If your body releases cortisol with fixed regularity then you can cope with stress better, says NWO-funded researcher Angela Sarabdjitsingh. She investigated the rhythm of corticosterone production in rats. This rat hormone is comparable to the human stress hormone cortisol. Rats deal considerably less well with stress if the pattern of corticosterone release changes. An irregular release pattern is a characteristic of chronic stress and stress-related diseases. It might therefore be possible to treat these by restoring the rhythm.
The hormone cortisol has to activate other proteins in the body and brain for a satisfactory response to stress. Yet Sarabdjitsingh discovered that important genes are activated less as soon as the rat's body is exposed to flattened corticosterone patterns. In a flattened pattern individual pulses are no longer recognisable as there are no more hourly peaks or troughs. That is interesting because conditions such as depression are characterised by a flattened rhythm in the cortisol release. Therefore it might be possible to treat such conditions by using medicines to adjust the rhythm.
Every hour the adrenal glands release the stress hormone cortisol (in rats corticosterone). However, disease or ageing can cause considerable disruption to this hourly rhythm with the result that the body responds less well to stress and pressure. Sarabdjitsingh investigated how the rhythm influences the stress response and the resilience of the hormonal and behavioural stress reaction. She also investigated if any changes in the pattern took place in tissues influenced by the stress hormone...
Pumping at Work: The Government Asks Working Moms How They Do It Boobs and bosses: it's a combination that can unsettle even the savviest supervisor. That's why the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has issued a widespread "request for information" from employees, employers and breast-feeding advocates to share insight and personal stories about how they've managed to abide by the new law mandating break time for nursing mothers.
Approved in March 2010 as part of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), the law requires employers to provide "reasonable" break time and a private place other than a bathroom where a working mom can express breast milk for her nursing baby.
When the DOL comment period ended Tuesday, the agency had received enough submissions to keep dozens of federal employees busy reading for days. They'll comb through the testimonies and suggestions, culling useful tidbits for inclusion in what amounts to a blueprint it plans to issue soon about how to make pumping at work…work.
(The bathroom clause represents a significant victory for nursing mothers. For some inexplicable reason, employers have long carved out nursing dens for pumping employees right next to a toilet stall. Speaking from experience, the ick factor was considerable. After all, if you wouldn't prepare your own food in the lavatory, why should you prepare baby's there?)...
Change in PSA Level Does Not Predict Prostate Cancer, Study Finds Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center have found that change in PSA levels over time -- known as PSA velocity -- is a poor predictor of prostate cancer and may lead to many unnecessary biopsies.
The new study of more than 5,000 men was published online February 24 in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Andrew Vickers, PhD, Associate Attending Research Methodologist in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and lead author said, "We have found no evidence to support the recommendation that men with a high PSA velocity should be biopsied in the absence of other indications. In other words, if a man's PSA has risen rapidly in recent years, there is no cause for concern if his total PSA level is still low and his clinical exam is normal."
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among American men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men, according to the American Cancer Society. While PSA screening is widely used for the early detection of prostate cancer, it is also associated with a high rate of overdiagnosis, which can lead to unnecessary treatment and anxiety. Currently, early detection guidelines of several organizations (the National Cancer Center Network and the American Urological Association) recommend that men with a rapid rise in PSA -- or a high PSA velocity -- have a surgical biopsy for prostate cancer, even if there are no other indicators that cancer may exist. Those indicators could be an elevated baseline PSA or a positive digital rectal exam (DRE)...

I attended the Wiley seminar 2 years ago and I can truly say that the teaching that I received during these "Two Days Back on Earth" has helped me tremendously in my every day practice for the treatment of my patients with hormonal issues.
The first part of the conference is breath taking; it gives a new perspective to our role as anti-aging health care professionals, pointing out the importance of the natural biological hormonal rhythms that need to be kept in harmony with all other cycles of nature and the environment.
Both the evidence- based approaches as well as the amount of science presented by TS Wiley to support her protocol are impressive. The practical aspect of the seminar with hands-on material and group brainstorming with interesting case-studies allows the attendees to immediately apply their new knowledge and develop their personal skills to adjust the protocol to various patients' needs...

Wiley Protocol Experts Answer Your Question:
Q: Why do patients feel fine on static dosing?
A: Any hormone in any way is better (in terms of quality of life) than none at all. The dramatic improvement on the Wiley Protocol in all areas, in quality of life and clinical markers like bone density, hot flashes etc… is far more pronounced. And, of course, Dr. Taguchi's work has shown a significant reduction in cancer risk compared to no hormone restoration at all.
Hormones are dose dependant. For example, when a women approaches menopause the amount of estrogen produced by the ovaries steadily declines. Many internal changes take place without a perception of such,… as increased bone loss, loss of skin collagen and elastic tissue, decreased rate of nerve tissue repair etc. However, when a critical point is reached many women experience hot flushes, psychological disturbances, sleep difficulty which brings them to their doctor. Many of these later symptoms can be relieved with small static doses of hormones, even synthetic ones. Many women with healthier adrenals can go through menopause without much difficulty. Logically to optimize mind and body function, hormones should dosed and administered as close as possible to how nature did it, it is not scientific to ignore this. Remember, hormones are signals, they work in concert with one another and the environment, and they cannot be on all the time. Hormones have rhythms which we must respect.

F.Y.I... We have been told that there are many pharmacies around the country claiming to make the Wiley Protocol. Unless your hormones come in our color coded packaging (green and purple for women, blue and burgundy for men), it says Wiley all over and the pharmacy has our sign in their window, they have not registered with us to make the authentic Wiley Protocol. You would be getting a generic product that will not stand up to federal scrutiny for scientific study.
As a provider we expect you to honor our trademarks and send your prescriptions to a Wiley Registered Pharmacy.
