From 1987 to 1998, Dana Nelson’s HealthPlus Pharmacy has provided long term medication, services, durable medical equipment, and consulting for most of the skilled nursing facilities and board and cares on the Central California coast, at one time spanning an area from San Miguel to Solvang. Dana changed the standard of practice for long term care in the area. Cambria Village Pharmacy: Owned by Dana since 1996, Cambria Village Pharmacy is a small community pharmacy in an isolated area, which provides durable medical equipment, nutraceuticals, flu shot clinics, PTI/INR consultation in addition to prescriptions/consultations.

When Dana purchased HealthPlus Pharmacy (then Hurley's Pharmacy) in 1987, there were ten independent pharmacies in San Luis Obispo; this is the only one remaining. Under Dana's leadership the HealthPlus Pharmacy has evolved into a pharmacy that utilizes a team approach within departments, with other departments, with other professionals on staff (nurse, nutritionist, clinical psychologist, diabetic educator, acupuncturist, and shortly, a physician). The goal has been to provide a continuum of pharmacy care from acute, sub-acute, long term and ambulatory care. As noted in the attached HealthPlus Pharmacy brochure, accomplishments include:

Large durable medical equipment and home health care supplies department Naturopathics / Homeopathic Immunizations on site, including travel medicines, Hepatitis a/b, pneumonia's and meningitis. Roster of immunizations attached. Additionally, Dana Nelson offers flu shot clinics in the community, inoculating over 5000 local residents per year. Flu Shot Clinics outreach with EOC, Cuesta College County Health Department, board and cares, and local businesses. Dana helped pioneer the dispensing of Plan B within the community and was a trainer for Plan B and injectable contraceptives. He worked with Pharmacy Access Partnership to develop the Plan B dispensing pharmacy network in California.

A supplemental brochure is available which itemizes the Disease State Management component of the pharmacy generated by Dana Nelson. It includes blood pressure/hypertension, asthma/COPD' diabetes smoking cessation, wound care, osteoporosis, HfV, pain management, dyslipidemia, anti-coagulation, Alzheimer's screening, pharmacokinetics and women’s/men's health. He has implemented and is performing medication therapy management. Under diabetic services, Dana has credentialed in Sweet Success and gestational diabetes. Under Dana, HealthPlus Pharmacy has specialized in bio-equivalent hormone replacement treatment (BHRT) for both men and women. Dana is the Pharmacist-in-Charge Trainer for Wiley Protocol Registered Pharmacies and this highly ranked clinical pharmacy works under collaborative agreements for various protocols.

Dana routinely performs pharmacy consultation for various local, community and world health organizations. Dana Nelson’s HealthPlus Pharmacy has provided medications to the local Hospice for many years providing pain management and support. Under Dana’s competent guidance, the newly expanded HealthPlus Pharmacy is the largest, most comprehensive source of sterile compounded medication on the Western California coast.

Additional services offered in support of the non-profit community include EOC, Planned Parenthood, Hospice, and Surgical Center. Dana Nelson’s HealthPlus Pharmacy has served as a model for the Pharmacy Access Partnership, and Dana has worked with Pharmacy Access Partnership to develop a program that will allow pharmacists to screen and treat for Chlamydia with the PPN Premier Pharmacists Network. Dana also consulted to provide the standard for Medication Therapy Management in 2006 and is the go-to interview for local television stations, including KSBY and KCOY. He is often interviewed and featured on the nightly news commenting on current issues. He has participated actively with IIICAP, a group dedicated to assisting seniors with Medicare Part D. He has often participated in Career Days for various venues including Rotary, San Luis Obispo High School and California Polytechnic University. He is a member of the Central Coast Healthcare Alliance, an organization of local health professionals which meets periodically to review conditions and case studies and input on how each specialty can contribute to the treatment.
